However, if we become hyper-empathetic, it can negatively affect our overall well-being and health and we may fall into a co-dependent relationship. It can almost feel like we lose the ability to be ourselves as we continuously tune into others.

Imagine a radio that is scanning through all available stations at once but lacks the ability to identify the one that is essential and advantageous to tune into, or to know when to turn it off. Consequently, this situation inevitably generates disorder and unease in the body, mind, and energy, just as a malfunctioning tune-in button on a radio would, causing us to cease listening to it.

 
 

WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF EMPATHY?

  • it is our ability to understand other person’s problems and logical respond to their emotions.

  • this is our ability of feeling others' emotions. You do recognize those emotions but you’re aware this does not belong to you.

  • this is a combination of cognitive and affective empathy and simply means you do have strong need to help the person in need.

 
 
 

What are the Signs of Excessive Empathy?

Energetical - feeling drained around other people and large crowds or in the buildings and shopping centers, feel drained by loved ones, low life energy.

Emotional – perceived as hypersensitive, strong emotional reactions, other people’s problems affect you deeply, you experience emotional or physical response for days after someone else suffered an injury or other painful event, feeling overwhelmed when talking to other people about their problems as you feel it’s happening to you, overthinking.

Physical - fatigue, headaches, digestive, respiratory, adrenals, or thyroid issues, unexplained body pains or allergies.

Mental - can’t switch off, constantly thinking of others' problems, difficulty to commit mentally, procrastination, neglecting yourself and your needs because of focusing on others’ problems, unhealthy boundaries – can’t say no; low confidence and assertiveness; depression and anxiety, feeling stuck or trapped.

What are the Signs of a Lack of Empathy?

The polar opposite of hyper-empathy is a lack of empathy. People with empathy deficit disorder tend to be overly judgemental. They focus on their own needs and ignore the emotions and emotional needs of others. It is almost impossible for them to comprehend any other point of view which differs from their own conviction. They lack awareness of expressing gratitude or appreciation to their loved ones. Their family and friends may perceive that they tend to ignore what others are going through.
